Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)

What is SPACE?

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is an evidence-based method with a unique approach to working with childhood anxiety.  The treatment is parent focused.  The child is the client; however, it is not necessary for the child to receive treatment.  Parents are trained in the key concepts of the program and given tools to create positive changes in their child’s anxiety, or related problems.  The process is structured and collaborative.  Parents leave each session with specific tasks to complete in this tiered approach.

How does SPACE work?

The program recognizes the special role parents have in supporting their children.  Children instinctively look to their parents for safety and parents instinctively attempt to provide this.  Some of the ways comfort and security are provided, however, can serve to maintain or increase anxiety.  SPACE teaches strategies to both support the child and reduce anxiety.

Parents will work with a trained professional in these key areas:

  • Education about anxiety.  This is provided to parents and other caregivers. The child may be included but it is not mandatory.

  • Learning how to provide support as specifically defined in the SPACE approach.

  • Developing and implementing a plan to gradually reduce accommodations.

What problems can SPACE help with?

Research has shown that SPACE is effective in improving several anxiety related problems, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety

  • Social Anxiety

  • Fears and phobias

  • Selective Mutism

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
